Two nights later, Poppy pulled into her dadâs driveway. Typically the garage door was gaping openânot because it was packed with cars but because her dad used the garage space for a shop. Right now the current projects seemed to be a door getting resanded and stained in one corner, and another corner was filled up with all the gear to water-seal the deck.
Coming home always brushed her mind with memories. Sheâd grown up in this house, once slept under the dormer window, the shake-shingle roof hanging over her head, her view of the world taller than anyone elseâs. The boys had slept on the second floor. Sheâd had to climb the third-floor stairs, but then sheâd had that precious room and the tall view all to herself.
Her brothersâ vehicles were already stacked in the drive, as was her dadâs truck. No one, naturally, had thought to leave her a spot near the door, even though they knew darn well she was carrying the food. Her dad might have asked her over, but Poppy knew there was an understanding unspoken in the get-togetherâthat sheâd bring the dinner.
Her men all had archaic ideas about women. Occasionally Poppy went on the war path, but reeducating them was such hard work that often enough she gave up. Besides which, her dad was so darned appreciative of the cooking that she just couldnât mind.
Heaven knew how her brothers had managed to come tonight, but Poppy suspected their wives had pulled a girlsâ night outâ¦which meant freedom for everybody. She climbed from her VW and immediately felt a sassy wind sneak down the throat of her jacket. She picked up her cell phone, then plopped it back on the seat. There were two calls on there from Web already that she hadnât answered.
She was going back to work next Tuesdayâand wanted toâbut she just wasnât ready for Web to see her new face yet. Wariness over her familyâs reaction was making her edgy enough.
She carried the first load of food in, yelling out a hello. She heard hellos back coming from a distant room, but nobody showed up to help her. No surprise. The guys were all wrapped around the big-screen TV, arguing about politics, some sports event screaming on the tube.
She pulled off her jacket, revealing Maude Roseâs huge, gaudy jeweled cuff with the bug-eye-sized tanzanite edges. It had taken the visit from Bren for her to think of a trick. No one was going to notice her face with that wild chunk of jewelry to draw their attention.
She hiked back outside twice, hauling in lasagna, apple kuchen, fresh French bread and a spinach salad with mandarin oranges. Her momâs kitchen had never changed. Her dad never moved a thing. A mangy mutt named Lurch was sprawled in front of the fridgeâjust in case anyone wanted to give him a treat. A cat wandered in so she could get her neck rubbed, too. The oblong table had to have five pounds of mail, tools
